Vidcast 9 {Slang} ~ "Like, LIKE!"

(For all students, teachers and lovers of English ~ please share widely! Comments on this Video Blog are very welcome :-)

Video Script:

Intro (shouted): "Hotch Potch English - The Mega Minute!"

Let's face it: most young Americans probably know a LOT of words. But there's one word they really really like.
And that word is: LIKE!

The expression "was like", in new American English, can mean "said":

"And I was like: are you serious?" means "And I said: are you serious?"

Sometimes it doesn't mean anything at all:

"I was like, so mad..." means "I was so mad..."

(Special Note: 'mad' in American English means 'angry'. 'Mad' in British English 'mad' means 'crazy'...)

If you use "like" to mean "appreciate or enjoy", it gets complicated:

"I really like, like you!" (that's a lotta liking going on!)

And if you use "like" for comparisons it gets confusing:

'It was like, like an old 40s gangster movie.' - 'And did you like, like it?' - 'Like kinda...'

Americans, huh? You gotta like 'em!

End (whispered): "Hotch Potch English dot com (hotchpotchenglish.com), - 'The Mega Minute !' "

(For all students, teachers and lovers of English ~ please share widely! Comments on this Video Blog are very welcome :-)

Video Script:

Sab: "Life! Life is full of perplexing questions.

And I'm afraid I don't have very many answers.

Here are five...

1) Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin?

(ooohh... hmmm...)

2) Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouths closed?

(I don't know, dear... I don't know)

3) Why don't you ever see the headline, "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

(bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee... no :-(

4) Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

(a-breee-veee-aaayyy-tiiddd - hmmm...)

5) Why do doctors call what they do "practice"?

(Nurse! The scalpel! No, I mean the scissors! No no no, I mean the forceps. No no, I mean the cheese slice... oh dear...)

If you know the answers to any of these strange questions, please, let me know.

End (whispered): "Hotch Potch English dot com (hotchpotchenglish.com), - 'The Mega Minute !' "
