"the bottom line"

The literal meaning:
"Our bottom line doesn't look good - I think we might go bankrupt!"
In a company's accounts, the 'bottom line' is the amount of money they have made or lost.
"We're losing money gentlemen. We mustn't forget our bottom line."

The idiomatic meaning:
"The bottom line is, we're in a lot of trouble!"
We use 'the bottom line' in every day language to mean 'the most important thing or factor to consider'.
"The bottom line is... English is a difficult language. But keep trying and you will succeed!"
