Vidcast 9 {Slang} ~ "Like, LIKE!"

(For all students, teachers and lovers of English ~ please share widely! Comments on this Video Blog are very welcome :-)

Video Script:

Intro (shouted): "Hotch Potch English - The Mega Minute!"

Let's face it: most young Americans probably know a LOT of words. But there's one word they really really like.
And that word is: LIKE!

The expression "was like", in new American English, can mean "said":

"And I was like: are you serious?" means "And I said: are you serious?"

Sometimes it doesn't mean anything at all:

"I was like, so mad..." means "I was so mad..."

(Special Note: 'mad' in American English means 'angry'. 'Mad' in British English 'mad' means 'crazy'...)

If you use "like" to mean "appreciate or enjoy", it gets complicated:

"I really like, like you!" (that's a lotta liking going on!)

And if you use "like" for comparisons it gets confusing:

'It was like, like an old 40s gangster movie.' - 'And did you like, like it?' - 'Like kinda...'

Americans, huh? You gotta like 'em!

End (whispered): "Hotch Potch English dot com (hotchpotchenglish.com), - 'The Mega Minute !' "

Podcast Script:

Welcome to the...
Hotch Potch English ~ Mega Minute Podcast No.11!

_____________________________
Today's Expression

"to all intents and purposes"

This is an important and sophisticated expression.

"To all intents and purposes he can speak English fluently."

This means it is not exactly true but the effect is the same.

"I grew up with my uncle, and to all intents and purposes, he was my father."

This means, he wasn't my father, but acted exactly like a father.

"Nothing has been signed, but we shook hands on it, so to all intents and purposes we've got the contract."

This means, although it is not official, in effect it is more or less certain.

So, to all intents and purposes this podcast is finished!
