Today's Quote

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."  (Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football Manager)

Today's Facts

The Scottish Cup tie between Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 1979 was postponed no fewer than 29 times because of bad weather.

A Manchester City fan was banned in 1995 from bringing dead chickens into City’s Maine Road ground. He apparently used to celebrate City's goals by swinging the birds around his head.

In 2004, James Hayter came on as an 84th minute substitute for Bournemouth against Wrexham and scored the fastest Football League hat-trick ever. It took less than 140 seconds.

Today's Joke

Two guys were walking through a cemetery when they saw a tombstone that read:
"Here lies John Sweeney, a good man and a Chelsea fan."

So, one of them asked the other: "When the hell did they start putting two people in one grave?"

That's all for today!

'shipping' OR 'cargo'?!

Today's Quote

"Why is it that when you transport something by car, it's called shipment but when you transport something by ship it's called cargo?"  (Anonymous)

Today's Facts

Men honk more than women, and men and women honk more at women than at men.

Drivers in convertibles with the tops down are less likely to honk than those with the top up.

Drivers honk faster at cars whose drivers are on cell phones. And drivers are more likely to honk at people from another state or country than their own.

Drivers honk less on weekends.

Today's Joke

The probability of being involved in a traffic accident is directly
proportional to time spent on the road.  Driving fast decreases one's
exposure.

One third of traffic accidents are caused by drunk drivers; two thirds
are caused by non-drunk drivers.

Therefore, the safest way to drive is drunk and VERY fast.

Hotch Potch English ~ Mega Minute Podcast No.43!

Today's Quote

"Elections are won by men and women chiefly because most people vote against somebody rather than for somebody."  (Franklin P. Adams 1944)

Today's Facts

You need 500 mayors' signatures to be able to run for president in France.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who loves orgies and violent sex, could easily have been France's new president.

The age limit for theoretically becoming the president of France is now 18!

Today's Joke

The French try to keep election results secret until the end. Special 'coded' Tweets included:

   - Netherlands-Hungary qualify for return leg
   - Dutch cheese at 27 euros, Tokai wine at 25 euros
   - high-heeled shoes are going out of fashion

* Code for François Hollande - Netherlands / Dutch cheese
* Code for Nicolas Sarkozy - Hungary / Tokai wine / high-heeled shoes

Hello, and welcome to Hotch Potch English - 'The Mega Minute'! And today, I'm talking to...

Sébastien: "Sébastien! Hello!"

And where are you from, Sébastien? Hi!
Sébastien: "I'm from Le Mans, in France."

OK. You don't sound like you have a French accent.

Sébastien: "No, I'm half French, half English. I've lived in England for the last 23 years."

OK, and what are you doing here in France?

Sébastien: "I'm studying for a TEFL Certification."

OK, where are you doing that?

Sébastien: "I'm doing that in Tournan-sur-Brie."

OK, where is that?

Sébastien: "Ahh, that's just south-east of Paris."

OK, and where are you living at the moment? Are you living in Paris?

Sébastien: "No, I'm living on-site, in Tournan."

And what are you about to do in the next hour or so?

Sébastien: "I'm going to teach a English class!"

OK. Looking forward to it?

Sébastien: "Yes, indeed!"

What's the topic of your lesson today?

Sébastien: "Ahh, activities and interests that one can be passionate about. So 'passions' in a way."

Passions! OK, that's a nice subject! And have you, yourself, got an activity you're 'passionate' about?

Sébastien: "Yeah. I'm an aikido teacher, so I've been doing that for seven years and I'm very passionate about that."
Have you got a quick move you could show us? Which doesn't involve pain to me!

Sébastien: "Not really!

OK, all right, I'll leave it at that. I'll wish you luck, and you'll let us know how it goes!

Sébastien: "Thank you very much! Thank you, bye."

Good luck! Bye bye.

Hello, and welcome to Hotch Potch English, and today I'm talking to...

Rory: "Hi, I'm Rory, from Dublin, in Ireland."

Eileen: "And I'm Eileen, and we live in Malahide, in Dublin."

OK, and tell me, Rory, why are you here in Paris?

Rory: "I'm here in Paris to learn to become an English language teacher.

OK. Rory, what do you know about Paris? Have you been here before?

Rory: "Yes, I've been here before. Over the years we've been here on holiday, and I've been here on business as well. So we know the sites, but we haven't spent extended periods of time here, so we're looking forward to having a few weeks to be able to learn more about Paris.

OK, and Eileen, what's your favourite thing about Paris, if you have one?

Eileen: "Oh, I like a lot of things about Paris. Maybe drinking coffee, and just exploring and listening to the people and being part of Paris life..."

And are you thinking of staying here for quite a while or you're just passing through?

Eileen: "No, we're not passing through, for once, we're hopefully going to stay in Paris for an extended time, maybe up to two years, maybe beyond, and so we'll see how it goes.

OK, 'maybe beyond'! Rory, what do you think of that?

Rory: "Yes, I think, I like the sound of it, it's good. I mean, two years would certainly be our horizon at the moment, and if it goes beyond that we'll be very happy."

Have you got a favourite place in Paris, Rory?

Rory: "I like the Latin Quarter. I must say, I like the atmosphere there. But there are many other quarters as well that have their own special character.

And you know that Paris is rather well known for its Irish pubs - there's quite a lot of them! Do you think you'll be going there?

Rory: "I might go to one or two, but not too many! I came here to enjoy the French atmosphere. But it'll be nice to go to an Irish pub from time to time."

OK, good talking to you two. Have a good time in Paris!

Rory & Eileen: "Thank you, Bye bye!

Today's Quote

(Anonymous)
"Growing old is nothing more than mind over matter: if you don't mind, it doesn't matter!"

Today's Facts

Research shows that living with pets like dogs or cats helps us live longer!
A study has found that laughing a lot is good for your heart! Ha ha!

To feel instantly refreshed... switch off the TV, disconnect the phone, sit down alone for a while and do... absolutely nothing!

Today's Joke

Signs you're getting older:

   - The little grey haired lady you helped across the street is your wife!
   - Your little black book only has names that end in 'M.D.'
   - You sing along with elevator music
